Mulgan’s Track progress
In spite of possible legal problems, the Christchurch City Council could clear part of Mulgan’s Track — an access to Clifton Terrace hillside homes — after consulting a soils engineer about how far it can go without risking more slips from above.
Warning signs would be placed at each end of the track, according to a works and traffic committee recommendation made yesterday, telling walkers of the danger from slip and rock falls.
Hillside residents need some alternative access up and down the slope while the hairpin bend on Clifton Terrace is being repaired, since the street is completely closed by construction crews at certain times of the day. The council will keep looking for a way to deviate the track round the slip area, and at the possibility of giving access over the service easement from Kinsey Terrace to Main Road, Redcliffs.
Councillor J. F. Burn said it was more important to create access for the public than to worry about the slight risk of compensation to some property owners if more damage was caused by clearing the track.
Boxing.—Carlos Monzon. of Argentina, climbed into a boxing ring for the first time in over a year in Monte Carlo and successfully deefnded his world title for the fifteenth and last time by unanimously outpointing the world’s secondbest middle-weight, Rodrigo Valdes, of Colombia. It was the second meeting between the two fighters. Their last battle also ended in a narrow points victory for Monzon.
