N.Z. losing its best people-Mr Rowling
PA Wellington The attitude of the New Zealand worker was the most immediate concern to the country, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) said. He told Victoria University students that workers’ attitudes ranged from apathy to hostility, concern, and frustration.
The latest immigration figures showed a loss of 22,000 during the last year. “Many young and adventurous people are leaving the country, and because of their sheer ability they will make their niche somewhere eise and be lost to us,” Mr Rowling said. Worker participation schemes would take shape
over the next decade in many forms.
“The systems will be tailored to the various industries,” said Mr Rowling. “We must wake up to the fact that the harder people work, the greater their entitlement to share in the results.”
There was no way out of New Zealand’s economic problems except for the sheer ability and capacity of the work-force.
“People who can be brought together in determination will stay together in achievement.
“People must be persuaded not to desert the country in the huge numbers that are leaving at the moment,” said Mr Rowling.
