'No trouble with Banaban grant’

PA Wellington The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) has said that he did not think there would be any insuperable difficulties about making a SAIOM grant to the Ocean Island Banabans, after their recent court setback. A London court last weekend awarded the Banabans $20,000 damages for their claim against the British Phosphate Commissioners. The Banabans had earlier turned down a $1.25M settlement offer from the commissioners, whom the Banabans alleged had made inadequate provision to restore Ocean Is« land through tree planting. The British, Australian, and New Zealand Governments agreed in May to make a

SIOM ex gratia payment to a fund for the Banabans.

The payment was agreed to on condition that the Banabans did not appeal in an earlier royalties case against the British Government, which they lost, and that they would seek an early resolution of the claim against the British Phosphate Commissioners. The Banabans have expressed disappointment with the- latest $20,000 award of damages, and have said that they will appeal. “If the Banabans confine any appeal to the replanting issue against the British Phosphate Commissioners, it is probable that there will be no insuperable difficulties over the ex gratia payment,’’ Mr Taiboys said.
