Call to cut tolls

Opposition to increased road tunnel tolls mounted yesterday. The Lyttelton Harbour Board adding its voice to that of the Lyttelton Borough Council.

The board had no hesitation in giving the support sought by the council. It went further — calling for a thorough investigation of the tunnel’s operations and financing, with a view to abolishing tolls altogether. One board member, Mr A. A. Macfarlane, said that it was time “the

whole set-up in the tunnel was re-examined” — especially in the light of recent amalgamation and reorganisation of local bodies.

“The Tunnel Authority is one of the smaller concerns. It is running its own show and in a very expensive way — or so it seems on the outside,” Mr Macfarlane said.

“I am not criticising, but it is getting into debt. Perhaps it should amalgamate with another local body.”
