Gas pipe likely to go ahead

NZPA-Reuter Ottawa i The National Energy Board of Canada has announced its approval of an application by a CanadianAmerican consortium, Foothills Pipes (Yukon), Ltd, to build a SB6OOM natural-gas pipeline across western Canada to connect with the proposed Alcan project in Alaska, giving American consumers access to large reserves of the fuel at |Prudhoe Bay. I The decision, which is expected to be endororsed by [the Canadian Government next month, is in accord with the findings of an envi-

ronmental task-force that advised President Carter last week to accept the Alcan route rather than several alternative proposals for bringing Alaskan natural gas to users in the lower 48 states.

A debate on the proposal in the Canadian Parliament, which received .the board’s report yesterday. 'will be the next step towards a final decision by Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet. This decision is expected in time to meet the deadline of September 1 set by the U.S. Congress for President Carter to choose a route for the gas from Northern Alaska.
