Forgiving President
NZPA-Reuter Washington President Carter said he was faithful to his wife and promised to pray for members of his staff who did not follow his example. The President, a devout Southern Baptist, evoked tumultuous laughter when he gave his reply to a press conference questioner who wanted to know about the sex habits of White House officials.
The questioner mentioned a report quoting Dr Peter Bourne, the President’s adviser on drugs and health, saying that while Mr Carter was monogamous, he did not criticise officials involved promiscuously with other women.
“He certainly is right in part of it,” the President said. “My relationship is monogamous.” When the questioner persisted in dealing with White House staff, the President went on: “My preference is that those who associated with me— in fact, all people — would honour the same standards that I honour . . . “If there are some who have slipped from grace, then I can only say that I will do the best I can to forgive them and nrav for them ”
