Joint drive against Communist outlaws
NZPA-Reuter Kroh (Malaysia) I Malaysian and Thai military forces have launched I their third joint operation : against communist guerrillas. | in southern Thailand. ; Military officers in Kroh I said that the targets of the; ! operation, code named CaIhaya Dena (Secret Ray), 1 were jungle sanctuaries of the outlawed Communist ; Party of Malaya in Betong salient — a large wedge of; ‘territory jutting into Ma-! ilaysia. They said that more com-1 Ibined troops were deployed I in the drive than in the two I previous operations mounted I in the Sadao district of
Thailand, west of Betong, in January-April. But they gave no figures. The West Malaysian military commander (Major-Gen-eral Datuk Sulaiman), urged ! his men before the battle to disregard reports that they (were going into battle against Moslem separatists lin southern Thailand, who were fighting against the Thai Government for an Islamic republic on the border with Malaysia, itself a Moslem State. The general ordered the : troops to stay out of Betong town which was the scene of a violent anti-Malaysian demonstration in May last year.
