Diseases notified

Two cases of suspected infectious diseases were reported last week to the Health Department in Christchurch. They were one case of salmonella, and one of pulmonary tuberculosis.

The controversial Westport tug James O’Brien, which is up for tender. The Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport has decided to sell the vessel, in spite of protests by the Westport Harbour Advisory Committee, because its running costs of $15,000 annually are considered to be too expensive. Marine Division officials feel that the workboat C. F. Schadick (alongside) will be able to do harbour-bar soundings until a replacement probably a launch is found for the James O’Brien.

A deputation today will ask the Minister of Transport (Mr MacLachlan) to retain the tug until a suitable replacement is found. The committee is being supported by the Seamen’s Union and the Merchant Officers’ Guild.
