Milk sale drop levels out
Milk sales in Christchurch had dropped noticeably since the retail price rose to 9c, the manager of Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd (Mr K. Grofski) said yesterday.
There had been a continual drop in milk sales since the price was doubled to 8c in February, 1976, he said. Then, when the price rose to 9c in February this year there was an average drop in sales of at least 7 per cent. However, this downward drift in demand was slowing, he said. Part of the drop could be accounted for by consumers using milk more thriftily, Mr Grofski said.
Although milk deliveries were down, dairy sales had increased, he said. People were probably trying to cut down consumption, but finding that they had underestimated their needs, he said.
