Jean Cruguet aboard, starting from barrier No. 2, ran second for much of the race.

But he was boxed in by J. O. Tobin in front and Text pounding on Ills flank. By the time he managed to break out he seemed tired and in the final quarter slipped further and further behind.

Some observers suggested that, although Seattle Slew had looked good in pre-race workouts, he must have been suffering from jet lag from his flight from the East Coast earlier in the week. The race was worth 8194,900 to the winning owner.
