Salmonella hits 23 after meal
Twenty-three people have been affected by salmonella food poisoning after attending a function somewhere in CanterburyThe deputy medical officer of health (Dr J. J. Horan) said that the first cases had been notified last week but it was possible that more cases might he notified. He was unable to say where the poisoning had originated. “If we thought it was in the public interest that we do this, we would say where the poisoning originated,” said Dr Horan. He believed that all those affected had attended one particular function.

Salmonella generally originated from poultry’ which had not been properly cooked. The symptoms were abdominal pain and diarrhoea, A person suffering from salmonella could pass it on if he did not wash his hands properly after going to the toilet. Dr Horan said that if a restaurant or caterer was found to be the source of the poisoning, health inspectors advised them. Most establishments were only too happy to cooperate.
