Hearings in Chch on nuclear power
The Royal Commission on nuclear power generation! will sit in Christchurch thisj week. Twelve submissions; are scheduled to be heard. The commission has al-] (ready heard 79 submissions] (in 36 hearings, in Welling-: ton. Auckland, and Dunedin. The number of submissions eventually is expected to exceed 140. Of the ones heard so far, 20 are from Auckland, five from_ Dunedin, and more than 50 from Wellington. The hearings start today ] at 2 p.m. The com-]' mission hopes that the public will attend, as one of the reasons for setting up the! commission was to extend] the knowledge of New Zea-| landers about nuclear power. I Representatives of various ! organisations and Govern-! ment departments will be I present to cross-examine! persons presenting submis- ■ sions. Members of the commission may also ask ques- ; tions.
I The Government wants (the commission to travel (Overseas to visit nuclearpower installations. It will be away about two months, probably in September and ] October. I On request, Dr lan Prior, chairman of Environment and Conservation Organisations, has given a list of places and people the antinuclear organisations con sider the commission should see overseas. The commission has been directed to report by December 31. ‘G'wyx’ protest ( Hundreds of homosexuals (have paraded in San Fran cisco and New York to protest against the repeal of a local law in Miami, Florida, protecting the gay community there from discrimination in employment, housing, and such public meeting places as bars and hotels.— New York.
