Debate sought on benefit cut
PA Wellington. The proposed reduction of the Domestic Purposes Benefit should not be implemented until there had been full public discussion about its effect on the living standards and security of young solo and single parents and their children, says the National Youth Council. The council’s presentident (Mr R. Tanner) said that the council at its last meeting had opposed the steps already taken by the Minister of Social Welfare to cut the benefit for the first six months. It could not see how the review committee which
recommended the cut “adhered firmly to the principle that the welfare of the children is paramount.” The council also expressed concern that as a reult of the action more children would become available for adoption. T'-ough not opposed to adoption in principle, the council felt that finance alone should not force the answer of adpotion on a young parent. It insisted that the Children were the innocent parties in a solo parent situation and should be protected from the effects of financial deprivation.
