Trade and aid
Sir, — Bumper harvests give rise to headaches (“The Press,” June 11) over falling prices and storage problems while millions of people continue to starve. Poor harvests give rise to headaches over rising prices and shortages, while even more millions of people continue to starve. This situation raises the question: why is food grown? It would seem that the last cc-.cern in growing food is to feed people. Food is grown (or not grown) in order to keep the affluent rich, and give them head-
aches (and also ulcers) in working out how to keep up their profit. Surely this represents the extreme poverty of the rich — a poverty’ of concern for people and for justice. While the rich sit on their fluctuating piles of food (and ever mounting piles of rubbish) getting headaches, the poor of the world also have headaches because of empty stomachs. — Yours, etc., JACK FERGUSSON. June 11, 1977.
