Long service in travel industry
Sir Jack Newman of Nelson, a hew Knight Bachelor, has received the distinction for his services to the travel industry, commerce, and tne community. Sir ‘Jack, who is 75, was educated'at Nelson College, and in 1922 assumed the management of Newman Bros, Ltd, from his father. The company had been formed by his father and uncle. From 1965 to 1974, he was a director of Direct Transport (Holdings) Ltd, Rotorua, and from 1965 to 1973 was a co-founder and director of Allied Freightways, Ltd. He has been a director since 1960 of Zip Holdings, Ltd, and a director of L. and M. Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, since 1972. He was an original director of Transport Nelson,. Ltd, and has been chairman] since its inception in 1938.1 He is a former director of Cook Strait Airways. Sir Jack served on the] Nelson City Council for nine I years, served on the Nelson! Employers’ Association for I 20 years, and was first president and is now a life mem-' her of the New Zealand Travel and Holidays Association (now the National Travel Association). He was on the executive of the New Zealand Bus. and Coach [Association for 10 years. He has represented Neison province at cricket, golf, 'rugby, and bowls and was a i member and selector of the New Zealand Cricket Council. He formed and was 'chairman of the New Zealland Cricket Foundation [about 1972. I Sir Jack, who is a Justice! of the Peace, is married,| with four daughters.
