Environment centres

Sir, — Environment centres and organisations should enjoy a symbiotic relationship for their mutual benefit; there is no question of rivalry. Unfortunately, they share the same limitation —■ lack of money — and rely almost completely on voluntary contributions and help. This results in an inefficient service and, for some, too great a personal sacrifice. If environment centres are to act as co-or-dinating centres for environmental organisations as well as supporting regional and national projects, and if they are to encourage environmental education and research, then financial aid is an urgent necessity. Funding to both environment centres and organisations has been suggested, but not that the former should be especially favoured. Voluntary helpers

would still be necessary as the grant would support only a minimum of trained staff, thus guaranteeing the centres’ useful and continuing existence. — Yours, etc.,

JANET R. HOLM. June 7, 1977.
