Govt backs housing
Wellington reporter
• j A large sum of money has i been approved by the Gov- ■ ernment for the Salvation i Army’s pensioner housing (project at Stoke, near Nelson — a Housing Corporation subsidy of $410,000, and I a Government loan of ! $82,000. I The money will go towards 33 single and eight [double pensioner units, which will be built in Songer Street. The Minister |of Housing (Mr Holland) | said that the Government’s assistance would be added to $200,600 which had been /raised locally. Mr Holland said that the money would pay the balance of the project not covered by Government funds, and would also go towards the 50-bed Eventide Home which would later complete ' the over-all development. A tender for the pensioner units has been accepted, and work on the site will begin immediately. It is believed that the construction and landscaping of the land, formerly Railway reserve, and supplemented by portions of the E. D. Wilson estate and . the adjacent Roman Catholic church property, will take . about a year. Elderly people would ; probably be in the units by June next year, Mr Holland i' said. The accommodation ! would be made available to [persons aged 60 or more, . with a need for housing and /limited assets.
