Challenge to Heaphy statement
A statement made by the Buller County Chairman (Cr W. J. Mumm) about the proposed Karamea-Coliingwood road has been challenged by the Organisation to Preserve , the Heaphy Track. At a recent meeting of the executive of the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast League of Local Bodies, Cr Mumm had said that the proposed road was 10 miles from the Heaphy Track at its closest point, said the secretary-treasurer of the organisation (Mr C. Fussell). “We challenge Cr Mumm to substantiate this statement, particularly because the Ministry of Works has verified a road route encoin- ' passing the narrow coastal I strip from the Kohaihai IRiver to the Heaphy River,” lhe said. | “Correspondence from Cr Mumm’s council and his collleagues to the north suggests that only a fringe of jbush would be left on the 'seaward side of the road along the coast. “As the beautiful coastal strip is traversed by the track, it is difficult to see how Mr Mumm can state that the Toad will be 10 miles from the track at its i closest point’.”
