Rugby cup to Auck.
NZPA Sydney I A superb display from the Auckland five-eighths, Mike Richards, steered his team to a win over Sydney in their Trans-Tasman Cup rugby match at Millner Field, Eastwood, on Sunday.
Richards landed two fine field goals and set up many back-line moves that sent his team to a strong victory.
The win enabled Auckland to regain the Trans-Tasman Cup it lost to Sydney in Auckland last year. However, Sydney was far from disgraced. Until three minutes from the end it only trailed by three points and it was two late tries by the Auckland full-back Colin Farrell and centre Tim Twigden, that gave the New Zealanders their comfortable winning margin.
Soecer.—Tommy Smith, the long-serving Liverpool defender who collected about $50,000 from a testimonial game last week and who was due to retire, has now been offered a two-year contract. Normally Liverpool players only receive a testimonial on retirement, but Smith’s amazing comeback as stand-in for the injured Phil Thompson has produced a change of policy.
