Haven away from bustle of city
After bustling days in the towns, there is an attractive (but little advertised) spot on the Coral Coast where one can relax before leaving these friendly isles.
Known as Vakaviti (“The way of Fiji”) it is five kilometres from Sigatoka (about 10 cents by bus), and costs about one third of the rate at the nearby tourist hotel.
You awaken to the sound of waves on the reef and tradewinds in the coconut palms, the sight of brilliant waters, crystal clear beneath the sun and
the smell of clean air, perfumed by frangipani and white ginger blossom. Private facilities include cooking and refrigeration, while tropical breakfasts and curry dinners are served if requested. Sigatoka has a colourful market, duty-free shops and department stores. Swimming is safe — either fresh pool or beach. Trips can be arranged on armchair safaris to the Sigatoka valley where there are magnificant inland views over the lushest part of Viti Levu. — N. E. SWANSTON.
