Engineers’ English in question

PA Wellington The Institute of Engineers is worried about the standard of written English of engineering undergraduates.

Concern was expressed at a meeting of the council of the institution, about moves to abolish English as a compulsory subject in the University Entrance examination. The president of the institute (Mr P. G. Scoular) said that although the improvement in oral speech had been noted, there was still a need for all professional men to be able to communicate in lucid written English. University schools of engineering should provide training in writing technical reports and letters as part of their undergraduate courses, he said.
