Holiday outings may extend
Lyttelton children may; have a school holiday pro-! gramme organised by the; Y.M.C.A. next August. The programme director ■' for the Y.M.C.A., Mr J.' Dempsey, said all the association’s holiday programmes for May next year had been booked out in advance, and it seemed there was a need for a programme in Lyttelton.
The Y.M.C.A. programmes \ ran for a week, and the child-> ren were occupied from 9 ! a.m. to 4.30 p.m., each day,: v-ph outings and sporting ac-j tivities.
i rlugrammes ran in! ! Bryndwr, Kaiapoi, Shirley,' and the city, with about 100 children in each. Mr Dempsey said he felt | the Y.M.C.A. programmes j were popular because child-! ren were taken on outings I
each day, rather than staying in one place. “We don’t advertise our programmes, and we have many children returning,” he said. The Y.W.C.A. also runs successful holiday programmes says its programme officer, Miss Cheryl Leyland. All-day, week-long programmes had been booked out in Riccarton for both weeks of the last holidays. Children wanting to go on this programme had been transferred to the city programme. The recreation and reserves department of the City Council also coped with big groups of children in its activities programme. Many of its one-day activities took place at Queen Elizabeth II Park, and nearly 200 children turned up for trampolining on May 112, for example.
