Packer welcome in Indies’
NZPA-Reuter Kingston If a man like Kerry Packer offered to put up sAustl2.sM for a cricket series in the West Indies, he would be welcomed by the West Indies Cricket Board, a board member said on Monday. “There’s nothing wrong with Packer putting up the money for the series, but he should have informed the Australian board before, making the announcement,”! the former West Indies cricketer, Mr Alan Rae, said in a television interview’ yesterday. Players had been earning a pittance for their service to the game for far too long, Mr Rae said. “The West Indies board is in need of money and if there was a Packer in the West Indies, the board would welcome him.” Another West Indies board member, Mr Esmond Kentish, who was interviewed with Mr Rae, said that Mr Packer’s project, for which he has signed 35 top players, was a good one and with proper planning could be a success.
