Council meetings
Sir, — The Christchurch City Council’s special estimates meeting yesterday began at 5 p.m., finishing about 8.45 p.m., with a 45-minute break. Immediately after this meeting, the ordinary monthly meeting started, continuing until 11.30 p.m. When Cr David Caygill protested about the marathon sitting, those members of the public still present must surely have agreed. At the end the Mayor refused new business and so a councillor who had wished to bring up a matter about which the Environmental Vanguard Organisation had written to the council was not allowed to speak. The letter urged the introduction of an early warning system when higher smoke levels are expected and it is most disappointing this matter was not considered. I agree strongly with Cr Caygill that the important estimates meeting and the ordinary monthly meeting should be held on different dates, so that proper justice can be done to matters councillors wish to discuss. — Yours, etc., (Dr) HELEN HERVEY, Chairman, Environmental Vanguard Organisation. May 24, 1977.
