Dr Skinner is- the first engineer to be awarded the Doctor of Science degree by the University of Canter’ bury. He is on the council of the world body for earthquake engineering. Dr Wardle’s research has been in the ecology and evolution of New Zealand vegetation. He has done botanical surveys in the North and South Islands and is also a member of the Westland National Park Board. Professor R. J. Ferrier, of Victoria University of W-1-lington and Dr J. I. Hubbard of the Otago University school of medicine were also elected fellows of the society.
