Building innovation

A new industrial fastener for the building industry, produced by the Deutsher Company of Australia, is being offered for sale in New Zealand.

The fastener, which is fitted without pre-drilling, is said to reduce building time and costs greatly because it is fitted in one action with the aid of an electric drill.

The company says that conventional bolts or screws need five separate operations to be inserted — drill a hole, change the tool bit, tap the hole, change the bolt bit, and finally, drive it home. The new fastener, which is self-tapping, is fitted in one operation. The company’s development manager (Mr R. J. McMahon) said that orders in New Zealand for the fastener had been good. More than 60 building contractors and businessmen attended a marketing promotion put on by the company in Christchurch yesterday. An earlier promotion was held in Auckland.
