Plumbers unhappy
Plumbers in the Canter j bury branch of the Plumbers] and Gas Fitters’ Union stopped work yesterday to) attend a meeting called after: the breakdown of their conciliation talks. The branch secretary (Mr K. A. Perkins) said that the plumbers were unanimous in their disappointment about the pay rates offered by the; employers for a new cate-1 gory of “craftsman plumber." I They would meet again on May 27 to hear of plans* being made by the national‘ executive of the union for: nationally co-ordinated protest action. The union seeks higher rates of pay for increased responsibilities and further training required for new classifications in the new Plumbers and Gas Fitters’ Registration Act. Mr Perkins said that the union sought $3.18 an hour for the new category but had been offered only $2.80.
