When Ari Vatanen was recently voted the fastest rally driver in the world, he | jokingly rejected the honour, Isayinr that he was not even I the fastest driver in his famlily. Last year Ari was beaten ’by his younger brother, Tatu, aged 21, in a short, i rally near their home village of Tuupovaara, near the Russian border of Finland, i “I was amazed,” says Ari. (“Tatu, I thought, had only driven a farm tractor. But I I lent him my old Opel As-’ ! cona for the day and he equalled me. I ‘‘The roads were icy and I ' was going as fast as 1 1 'could.” | ■ Tatu Vatanen is now] • serving compulsory military! graining in Finland, and Ari lis not sure whether his ’brother wishes to take up ’rallying seriously. I “He is obviously gifted, land I would be in a position to help him, but it will still ibe difficult for him to beIcome a works driver. I “Anyway,” says Ari, “I ’don’t think my mother could • stand it.”
