Davis Cup tie to Argentina
NZPA-Reuter Buenos Aires Guillermo Vilas swept to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, win over; Dick Stockton, of the United States, yesterday to clinch’ the Davis Cup American Zone tennis final for Argentina. The win in the first of the • reverse singles gave Argentina an unassailable 3-1 lead. Stockton looked capable of victory when he broke Vilas’ service in the eleventh game and went on to win the first • set. But Vilas rallied in the ’second set. His strong backihand passing shots broke Stockton’s service in the ’second, sixth and eighth games and after levelling at ione set all the Argentinian’ always looked the likely I winner. Argentina now plays Australia in the inter-zone semifinals. The American, Brian Gottfried, beat Ricardo Cano, 7-5 7-5, 6-0 in the second reverse singles to reduce Argentina’s final winding margin to 3-2. I
