City bridges
Sir. — Even after buying a book named “City of Christchurch District Scheme” I find it difficult to actually visualise within my mind’s eye just exactly the height of the elevated section. A bridge intended from Lincoln Road over the railway is mentioned, but I could find no reference to a bridge across Lincoln Road near Nairn Street. — Yours, etc., ROSIE WITTY. April 6. 1977.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. C. Scouiar) replies: “The ‘City of Christchurch District Scheme’ is a planning document prepared in the manner
prescribed by the Town and Country Planning Act. As such it is ..either required nor intended that it should provide detailed descriptions of all future projects in the city. The Scheme Statement, which occupies the first 26 pages of the District Scheme, is of a descriptive nature and under the section headed ‘Roads’ on page 17, there is a brief description of future motorways. In this description it is stated that they will have grade-separated junctions with arterial and primary roads. The index map to the planning maps shows Lincoln Road as a primary traffic street — coloured green — with the red line of the motorway crossing it. The Ministry of Works and Development which is responsible for construction of this motorway has had models available for public inspection both in the central city and the suburbs. The model may be inspected at the Ministry of Works and Development Motorway Office in Lincoln Road.”]
