I'm sure what he tells me is true, I'm sorry, but What can I do” Shall I beg him to take a more neighbourly Or calm philosophical View? No doubt, he can say I'm to blame. My Excuses must sound rather lame. I feel he might listen a Little More tolerantly, all the Same. Can I coax him, cajole, or inveigle? My Dog has the Brains of a Beagle — When he lifted his Leg on those Cabbages, Did he know that the Act was illegal? He was there, where he shouldn't have been — The Dog, not the Owner, I mean — And there must have been Eye-witnesses Of this disgraceful Scene. I’ve scolded the Dog. severely, And explained the Law to him clearly — But what can I do about the Cabbages But say I'm sorry, sincerely? The Complainant, I suppose. Might have used the Garden Hose On the Cabbages — and the Dog as well — Before we came to Blows. That’s Life, our Limited Span.' We live It as best We can — A tedious Tale, or a doggerel Rhyme Of a Cabbage, a Dog and a Man.
