Violence
Sir, — Garry Arthur's article on violence in New Zealand reflects a largely unspoken national concern. True, violence is on the increase in the Western world,, but I agree with the implication that it has increased more here than elsewhere. Cathedral Square or Queen Street are more dangerous than most city centres in other countries where you get trouble only when you look for it. But I disagree with Bob Gidlow’s claim that ours is naturally an aggressive society because we like rugby or because Mr Muldoon is our Prime Minister. Rugby stands for our sense of cor munitv; teamwork if you like. Mr Muldoon reflects an increasing lack of confidence in democracy's ability to solve modern problems. But are the schools doing their share uo reduce violence and vandalism by reinstating respect for authority? Or are they balked by the unhply alliance of bureaucracy and theory? — Yours, etc.,
