Badminton levy plan
It was more something that may happen next year than any business of immediate concern that stimulated Interest at the annual meeting last evening of the Canterbury Badminton Association.
The president (Mr A. G. Duckmanton) gave notice that the association was considering imposing a $lO building fund levy on every affiliated senior member for a period of two years, beginning in 1978. Such a levy, it was explained, would raise $30,000 and go a long way towards realising the association’s plan of adding two more courts to the Skellerup Hall, and upgrading the general facilities.
In his annual report, Mr Duckmanton noted the restrictions Imposed by having only a sixcourt hall. "The ultimate for inter-club competition," he said, “would be a round each week for all grades, but until more courts became available this is only a dream." He said that the Skellerup
Hall was entering its seventeenth season, and it was obvious that alterations would have to be made in the near future. It is proposed to add the two new courts to the southern end of the building and build changing and social rooms on the Pages Road frontage. Mr Duckmanton said he felt It was Important that the money for the Improvements should come from all players, and not just be left to a few. The cost would be about $lOO,OOO, and this was too big a sum to raise from raffles.
"With $30,000 plus the money we already have in hand, we would be well on the way, and we would be In a good position to seek a grant from the Council for Recreation and Sport, said Mr Duckmanton. In the meantime, he asked that the delegates discuss the scheme within their clubs. ® s * ocla ‘ lon made a profit of $5895 on its year's activities, and the treasurer (Mr B. B.
