Rock star on heroin charge

Keith Richard, lead guitarist with the Rolling Stones, has been charged with possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking, a Toronto police spokesman has said.
Thirty grams (one ounce) of heroin with an estimated street value of SUS4OOO was seized in a Toronto hotel on Sunday after a week-long investigation at Toronto International Airport by Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Ontario provincial officers, the spokesman said. Earlier, Richard’s girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg, was arrested at the airport and charged with possession of hashish and heroin.
The spokesman said that lOg (about l/3oz) of hashish were found, together with a spoon on which traces of heroin were found.
Pallenberg will appear in the provincial court in nearby Brampton and Richard will appear in Toronto, officials said.
The Rolling Stones are in Toronto to record an album.
Richard has already faced drug charges this year, after he attracted the attention of the local constabulary near Aylesbury, England, by careening off the Ml in his Bentley. A police search revealed traces of cocaine in a tube on the end of a silver necklace, and LSD in a jacket pocket. Charged with possessing these substances, he pleaded not guilty, but was convicted and fined $l2OO.
