Slow moves in regional development

PA Wanganui The Government is now working on proposals to set up a regional development committee, to work under the new New Zealand Planning Council, headed by Sir Frank Holmes, according to the Minister of Regional Development (Mr Gair). The new committee would probably be supported by a secretariat, promised in National’s election manifesto, he said in a telephone interview from Auckland.

Mr Gair repeated an earlier statement that the Government’s regional development policies would not immediately be put into effect because the Government wanted first to receive the recommendations of the task force on social and economic planning, and because it had to “move more slowly on expenditure” because of the financial situation inherited by National. Mr Gair said the task force had reported late last year. Its findings were now being “digested”, and the first moves were being made to set up a regional development planning mechanism.

Asked if he hoped the Government would be able to increase the regional development budget now, Mr Gair said, “It’s too early to be able to tell what we will be able to do in this area.”
