Power to the farm
A favourable recommendation has been made by the water committee of the North Canterbury Catchment Board for the issue of a water right to Mr C. M. .1. Smith so that he can run a hydroelectric plant at the Castle Hill station. which he bought recently. Mr Smith is better known as the man in charge of New Zealand’s largest hydro-electric scheme, in the Mackenzie Country, but his Castle Hill unit will generate 50k W at ‘he most. The committee was told that water would he pipetl to the turbine from the Whitewater Stream, a tributary of the Porter River. The property has an ageing diesel generator due for replacement, and all cooking and heating is by open fires.
