‘Convenience’ move
PA Hamilton The possibility of Sir Keith Holyoake’s becoming the next Governor-General drew criticism yesterday from the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling), when speculation that Sir Keith might be appointed was referred to him.
“His appointment would be out of line with anything in the past—it would simply be moving a politician sideways,” he said from his home in Richmond. Mr Rowling said that the Governor-General traditionally had been drawn from outside politics. This
tradition had been jealouslyguarded. There were New Zealanders outside the political arena who were capable of fulfilling such a position. Sir Keith’s selection would give the distinct impression that it was a measure of convenience to allow a Cabinet reshuffle.
