Freer flow of apples sought
PA Auckland A change in marketing regulations, to permit larger quantities of early season apples to reach consumers through the markets, is sought by fruit retailers. “We have an acute shortage of apples every year at this time.” said the president of the New Zealand Retail Fruiterers’ Federation, Mr J. Lowe.
The request is that growers be allowed to market fruit on their own account — at auction — with a minimal interest commission going to the Apple and Pear Board. Under the present regulations, the board buys the apples made available to it at a set price, and sells them by allocation to retailers. Fewer apples have reached the shops this way in the current season, but they have been selling freely at local orchard gates.
