Certificate from U.S. President
A chief radioman serving with the United States Navy Antarctic support force has become the first man in the force to receive a Presidential sports citation signed by President Carter. Chief E. Cuaron, who works in the naval communications centre at the base at Christchurch Airport, obtained his certificate for having jogged 150 miles in four months.
He said it was all part of the Presidential sports programme aimed to get all Americans in good physical shape. Chief Cuaron did his running under President Ford’s term and only qualified in late January, “so the new man didn’t waste much time, did he?” Chief Cuaron. who is from New Mexico, said all that was required was to run a minimum of two miles a day.
“Before I came to New Zealand I’d never jogged in my life. J suffered with a back problem and had been treated by a chiropractor. Then a New Zealand teletype operator at the base, Bill Anderson, got me interested and I began running. “Pretty soon I got the strtngth back in my back and now you could say I’m something of a jogging addict. Now I cover about 30 miles a week.” With the certificate marking his achievement Chief
Cuaron also received a special patch to be worn on his blazer and a lapel pin.
Another American serviceman at the base has made his final run to qualify for the citation.
