Energy policies

Sir, —Patrick Neary’ says we are stuck with the machine age. I am glad to note from a recent issue of “Engineers Australia” that there are, at last, engineers suggesting that we should start thinking small instead of big. We have a great opportunity in New Zealand to do two

things: develop intermediate technology (e.g. solar and wind energy and low-energy-consuming industry) and take a hard look at our energy consumption. We can make or break our future on this question. If we reach the point of really needing nuclear power, we are unlikely to be able to afford it and this means going without (with unknown consequences) or putting all our resources into it (abandoning all pretence of social justice and welfare because greed has to be satisfied first), or putting ourselves in the pocket of some overseas power bloc which is prepared to help (at a price).—Yours, etc.,

G. C. SUGGATE. February 23, 1977.
