NZPA Melbourne The American golf star, Johnny Miller, was relegated to the shadows as a local amateur, Doug Perry, fired a fire under par 67 to grab the overnight lead after the first round of the sAust4o,ooo Victorian Open at Varra Yarra yesterday.
Miller. 29. who is being paid ?Aust9ooo to play in the tournament, struggled over the opening holes but managed to finish with! a two-under-par 70. Perry, a 32-year-old insurance salesman who was dropped from ■ last year's Victorian amateur team, set a fiery pace over the I 'closing holes yesterday to come home in 32 for his 67. He was out in 35. one under the card, but finished eagle, birdie, birdie. [birdie, to clinch a one shot lead..
