In order to communicate

NZPA London A social welfare organisation in London has asked the New Zealand High Commission to give funds to help it teach immigrants from Commonwealth countries, “including New Zealand,” to speak English. The High Commissioner (Mr Douglas Carter) related the story when he spoke to the English Speaking Union in Dundee. “It was a heart-rending appeal.” Mr Carter said. “It said the organisation was spending a lot of money on a programme to teach immigrants from Commonwealth countries, including New Zealand, to read, write and speak English. It asked if the High Commission would care to make a contribution.

“A High Commission spokesman said later that a contribution would not be sent.
