Rescue off rocks

The Kaikoura lifeboat Rescue II combined with two other boats last evening to rescue three young men who had teen left clinging to rocks when their small boat sank in heavy seas.

The three had clung to the rocks for nearly an hour after their 151 t runabout was swamped. Another occupant managed to swim ashore at Whalers Bay. on the extreme end of the Kaikoura Peninsula, and walked about a mile to raise the alarm. The combined rescue Included the lifeboat, the Kaikoura fishing boat Kotare, and a runabout driven by Mr Geoffrey Hannon.

The three men rescued, who were taken off about 6 p.m., were Mr Kenneth Manera. and Mr John Rochford, both of Kaikoura. and Mr Barry Easton of Christchurch Mr Garth Bel), also of Christchurch, swam ashore to give the alarm. The Kaikoura lifeboat was called o".t twice yesterday. About 6 a.m. she was called out to a disabled Kaikoura fishing Ixiat, the Scorpion, which had broken down five miles offshore south of Kaikoura. Messrs Brian Harris and David Telfor, both of Kaikoura, were aboard the Scorpion.

Mr Harris called the Wellington marine radio station, which alerted the | Kaikoura police.
