Doctors’ fees

Sir, — I think I can help Mr C. J. Venning with his query about doctors’ charges. Professional fees are frozen for a year till mid-May, 1977, and inflation etc., has in quite a short space of time made them quite uneconomic except perhaps for young doctors who can work fast for very long periods of time. Not many of the large number of G.P.s over 50 years of age are likely to be able to stay in active practice much longer. It now costs a G.P. approximately $20,000 per year to run his practice and . this figure will rise sharply in 1977. His $20,000 would cover his share of the costs of running the medical centre and of servicing its mortgage, his motor expenses, personal sickness policy, locum payments to a practitioner for say four weeks annual holiday _ and subscription to professional societies and publications. It will not cover his share of the costs of any new expensive medical equipment as this would be capital expenditure. — Yours, etc., CHRISTCHURCH G.P. December 9, 1976.
