Canterbury 8 has fastest time

The strong Canterbury junior eight recorded the fastest time when the annual 4.5 mile race from the Estuary to Kerrs Reach was rowed on Saturday. Its time of 22min 9sec I stood up well with the best 'efforts of previous years but . a disappointing feature of the event was the failure of 'Avon |to put its top crew on the ’water. Avon recorded 22min i32sec last season.

The handicapping generally worked out very well, with the exception of the Avon No. 2 crew, which finished well in front of the field and Avon No. 3 well behind.

It was not surprising to see the Avon No. 3 eight fail to strike up an effective combination. The crew was a mixture of novices and maidens and included two oarsmen from another club, Union. ! Results were:—

Fastest times: Canterbury No. 1 (junior), 22:09, 1; Avon No. 1 (maiden), 23:16, 2; Union No. 1 (maiden). 23:39. 3; Canterbury No. 2 (maiden), 23:44. 4; Avon No. 2 (novice), 24:43. 5; Avon No. 3 (novice and maiden), 26:51, 6; Union No. 2 (novice), 26:54, 7.

Corrected times: Avon No. 2, 20:43. 1: Avon No. 1, 21:41, 2; Union No. 1. 21:54, 3; Canterbury No. 1. 22:09. 4; Canterbury No 2, 22:19. 5; Union No. 2. 22:44 . 6; Avon No. 3. 23:51. 7.
