Farm workers
Sir. — D. Robertson writes of the one effort from the New Zealand Workers’ Union nearly 30 years ago. In the years since the union has been conspicuous by its absence regarding anything constructive for farm workers. Most of the present-day farm workers were at school or not yet born in the years Mr Robertson mentions. Since its formation three years ago the N.Z. Farm Workers’ Association has obtained more for the farm worker than the union did in all the years it was supposed to be his representative. A few of the benefits from the association: a new award (the first for 15 years); an agreement with the employer unions on conditions of employment (the first); representations to Government by committees on education, taxation, and housing; our own superannuation scheme; a member on the Agriculture Training Council plus harmonious relations with the employer unions. — Yours, etc., A. D. SEARLE. Management Committee, N.Z. Farm Workers’ Assn. December 6, 1976.
