Top road runner killed

A Canterbury representative road runner, Murray Richard Griggs, died in hospital on Monday after being hit by a car the previous Friday morning. Griggs, a member of the strong Technical club, ran for Canterbury in the New Zealand junior road championship at Feilding last month. Aged 19, he has just completed a solid winter buiid-up and had high hopes of doing well in middle distance running on the track this summer. He was training regularly! with two former Canterburv 1500 metres champions, Alan: Gilmour and Frank Brookes. “Everybody in our club isi very upset. He was a very] popular person,” Gilmour I said yesterday. “We had a pretty close-knit team and; he was right in the middlej of it.” Before he decided to concentrate on running, Griggs was a keen rugby player.
