Disease watch to continue

Sydenham School will remain under Health Department surveillance until Monday, after a 10-year-old pupil there was confirmed as having diptheria last week. The boy was discharged from hospital after treatment. It has still not been confirmed if a girl who attends the same school has the disease, although she is in hospital. The girl was found to have discharging ears during a check by Health Department staff. The deputy medical officer of health at Christchurch (Dr J. G. Tees) said that he had given 50 diphtheria and tetanus booster injections at the school yesterday, and would do more today. Some children had received injections from their general practitioners. Checks had continued at the school of anyone who complained of a sore throat or discharging ears, and swabs had been taken from them, Dr Tees said. All swabs taken had been negative, except those of the boy and girl.
