Six rescues from water-race
Two toddlers had been pulled out of an open waterrace at Rolleston. one of them just in time, Cr N. J. Brown told a meeting of the Paparua County Councils’ stock water-supply committee yesterday. “That makes six rescues in the last two months,” he said. “The local people are getting up-tight about it.” The committee was informed that it might cost up to $lOO,OOO to pipe the water-race, which runs past the Rolleston School. “We have been talking of piping the race for years, but the cost is prohibitive,” said Cr C. W. A. Kyle. “Not to residents when the safety pf their children is concerned.” said Cr Brown. Cr A. Y. Shuker said that the Ellesmere County Council’s plans for Rolleston could affect relocation of the race. On his motion, it was decided to ask for a report on alternatives to the present race.
