High school change

Sir, — Though of scant comfort to M. J. Calder, his letter contains an important inaccuracy. He states that, the National Party needed only 51 per cent of the vote to become the Government and implement sweeping change. Alas, the present Government won 55 seats (63 per cent) with 47 per cent of the valid vote and only 39.6 per cent of the eligible vote. The unseated Labour Government secured, in 1972, 55 seats with 48 per cent of the votes recorded or 42.8 per cent of the eligible vote. Under our twoparty system a change of government results, without pause for deliberation, in the victor’s reviling, rejecting and rescinding any innovation of the vanquished. Mr Calder asks how the parents’ wishes can be heard and heeded. Forthwith, he and all who are disenchanted must press doggedly for Parliamentary reform. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) S. R. DAVEY, October 17, 1976.
